The Big Sleep
The
Real Inspector Hound
Anil's Ghost
The Red
Headed League
Collateral
The Big Sleep:
· Police
corruption and money talking. The police are paid to tell Marlowe to
lay off the Sternwood case. Marlowe stands for the democratic ideal.
· American
capitalism and the “American Dream”
· Loyalty.
Harry Jones is very loyal to Agnes Lozelle, a trait that Marlowe is
impressed by.
· Male
superiority. Marlowe is also framed higher than his female co-stars
and this is reflected by the patriarchal society.
· Socio-economic
divide. The poor stay poor while the rich get richer.
· Homophobic
society.
The Real Inspector
Hound:
· Crime
solving does not unravel like clockwork.
· The
disorderly nature of life.
· Send
up of hierarchies. Rise of the underdogs and marginalised groups.
· The
importance of taking initiative.
Anil’s Ghost:
· The
price of truth. Anil is always searching for the truth, but Sarath
has come to realise how the truth has been manipulated and can
sometimes be more dangerous than fiction.
· The
value and consequences of war. The un-winnable nature of war.
· Government
corruption and secretiveness.
· The
value of life. Numerous times throughout the text, people are killed
for the sake of an ideal or belief.
· Evil
from all sides.
The Red Headed League:
· Socio-economic
divide. Mr Wilson is the only character in the book not of high
standing in the community.
· Inability
of police to act and solve crimes.
· Pursuit
of wealth.
· England’s
belief in its industrial and imperial might.
· Patriarchal
society. No female characters are present in the text except for a
fourteen year-old girl who does a bit of “simple cooking and
cleaning.”
Collateral:
· Socio-economic
divide. Max desperately wants to stop being a cab driver and own a
limo company.
· The
value of life. Vincent continually takes out nuisances for his
clients. He describes these victims as just specks in the universe.
· The
hastiness of the FBI and other federal authorities to act if they
fear terrorism.
